The color of background for taking pictures

My cousin is having a black and white 50th birthday party. She wants me to take photographs of those who want to take pictures. What I would like to know is what color background should I use when the attire is black and white or black or white?

I'd steer clear of black or white and try a smoky gray. Or a subtle black and white pattern would be nice. A background with varying shades of medium to dark blue would be nice as well.
