Housewarming Idea Party

Welcome To Our Housewarming Idea Party page.

If you are looking to host a party that is sure to go over well, check out the tried-and-true party ideas below.

See below for all the decorations, games, and party drink ideas, as well as printable party invitations.

A housewarming party is a great idea to welcome new neighbors as well as show off your new diggs to friends and family. There no need to wait until all the boxes are put away-everyone understands how busy moving is. I think informal is the way to go for housewarming parties. Save the formal black tie events until you're more settled in!

Throw an "under construction" theme complete with yellow hard hats and yellow caution tape.

Give out inflatable hammers and goggles as party favors and door prizes.

Activity Ideas

  • Dedication ceremony. Plan an offical ribbon cutting for your new home, complete with well-wishers.
  • Hourly house tours to show the features of your new home.
  • Extreme makeover. Get the group to plan how to rearrange or decorate the room based on the host's unique tastes.
  • Have a painting party. Get a large group and choose one room to paint. Great for good friends who wouldn't be put out by being put to work! Make sure you have plenty of pizza and beer on hand.
  • What were they thinking? The host/hostess chooses are room that she just hates- you know, the one with orange shag carpet and disco ball. The guests can make a game out of guessing the former owner's ages, occupations, and interests. A bit cynical, but great fun!
  • If you've made lots of changes or renovations, be sure to include lots of before and after pictures for your tours.
  • Kid friendly. Any housewarming party can cater to kids by having a separate area for videos and crafts.

Invitations/Printables

If you want to create your own invitations, draw a caricature of your new home. You can also make a "blueprint" type invitation with a map and directions to your new home.

Keys, paint buckets, door knockers, etc be used as clip art in your invitations. Check out our printable invitations page for free printable invitations on the web.

Games

There will be so many activities going on, that you probably won't have much time for organized games. One to consider is an ice-breaker or get-to-know-you activity so old friends and new friends can get to know each other better. Create individual cards that require guests to mill about the room and talk with each other. Cards can ask questions such as "find someone who knows a famous actress" or "find someone who has traveled to a foreign country."

Music

Play popular dance music or the host's favorite tunes from his/her era (70s, 80's, 90's, etc.)

Food & Drink

Easy, low-preparation foods or take out are the way to go. Try pizza and beer or fried chicken and mashed potatoes.

See our theme party recipe cookbook for thousands of recipe ideas.

We also recommend the delicious Secret Restaurant Copycat Recipe Cookbook with recipes from Applebee’s, Cheesecake Factory, Red Lobster, Benihana, Olive Garden, and many other popular restaurants.

Aside from pop and beer, don't go all out of specialty drinks. A bottle of champaigne can help toast the event.

Here are a couple of sites that have a good selection of free drink recipes:
